T171 Upholstered Office Chair
by Medium2 Studio

Designed by Medium2 Studio, T171 brings the softness of upholstered furniture into everyday workspaces. Its restrained form sits naturally in both an office and a home setting. The back is treated as an integral part of the design, giving the chair a distinct presence even when it faces away from the room.
Fabric continues from the front of the backrest to the rear, creating a cohesive upholstered form. The J-bar connects the seat and backrest, pressing gently into the fabric to create a shallow depression. The contrast between the soft surface and the structural support gives the back its characteristic depth and shadow.
The backrest can be raised or lowered while retaining its upholstered outline. The overlapping positions show how it moves in relation to the central support, bringing adjustment into the same simple composition.
Low-back, external-headrest and high-back configurations share the same rear structure. Each changes the outline of the chair while retaining the fabric treatment and the distinctive connection at the lower back. Seen together, the three versions form a consistent family.
The design began with hand sketches and developed through three-dimensional studies in Gravity Sketch. Moving between these methods helped us refine the proportions of the seat and backrest, and explore how the support meets the upholstered form.
Around a shared table, the back of a chair becomes part of the space between people. T171 gives this everyday view the same attention as the seat itself, bringing a clear rear profile and a softer expression to places for work and conversation.
The T171 family also includes a mesh-back version, shown below. It retains the same J-bar and the outer contour of the upholstered backrest, translating the familiar silhouette into a mesh construction while maintaining a consistent identity across both versions.
